Try Outs for Boys Power League Teams

Try Outs for Island Volleyball Club Boys Power League Teams will be held:

Wednesday, August 29 from 7:00-8:30 p.m. at Alameda High School (this date is tentative as the gym is being worked on this summer and there is a chance the tryout may need to be rescheduled to a later date - check back here prior to the tryout to confirm the date and time has not changed)
and for those who cannot make it to the first tryout, you may show up and try out on either
TBD (check back for dates) at Alameda High School
or
TBD (check back for dates) at Alameda High School.

Please arrive between 6:30-6:45 p.m. with a parent or guardian in order to fill out required registration paperwork. Required paperwork includes: 1) the 2012-2013 Membership Form (both pages); 2) the USA Volleyball Player Medical Release Form; and 3) the Island Volleyball Club Registration and Release Form. All three forms are available for download in PDF format by going to the Forms page. Make your life easy by printing these now and arriving to the tryout with the paperwork already completed.

Try outs will be held at the new gym at Alameda High School (located off Oak Street between Central Avenue and Encinal Avenue, one block west of Park Street in Alameda - Map of Alameda High School), and are open to boys in high school ages 14 - 18 who are enthusiastic about improving their skills and playing in competitive tournaments in and around Northern California. The cost to tryout is $20 per person (players only need to tryout one day, preferably on August 22).

Boys Power League Season Costs

The cost per player for the season is roughly $750 (we are still awaiting the final cost of gym rental for practices so this may change a little bit) plus individual registration fees paid directly online by each individual participant. Your fees pay for NCVA team registration, tournament fees (see tournament schedule below), uniforms (uniform shorts, uniform jerseys, club t-shirt), volleyballs, facility rental for practices, water and snacks for tournaments, and coach stipend. Travel to and from tournament sites is not covered in this fee. Nor is lodging (not normally necessary) or food purchases while at tournaments. DO NOT LET THE COST BE A DETERRENT IF YOU REALLY WANT TO PLAY. For those who wish to participate, we will run fund raising activities if there is enough interest which will offer players the ability to reduce the cost of playing. Please see Jeff Silverman if the cost is a problem for you and we will work together so that interested players who make the team may find a way to participate. PLEASE NOTE THERE IS NO REFUND POLICY AS TEAM COSTS ARE FIXED FOR THE SEASON.

Boys Power League Practice Information

Playing on a club team requires a commitment as play is competitive and practice and teamwork are key ingredients to an enjoyable season. The team will be practicing 2 evenings a week beginning the week of August 22 through the first week in January. With a few exceptions, practices will be held on Monday and Wednesday evenings from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. at the main gym at Alameda High School. A full practice schedule will be distributed at the mandatory parent meeting for players who make the team(s).

Boys Power League Season Schedule

Island Volleyball Club boys Power League teams will participate in 1 warm-up non-league tournament and 6 league tournaments. It is likely teams will play in the Far Western Championships in early January. Tournaments are on Saturdays and/or Sundays, typically beginning at 8:00 a.m. and running all day. Most tournaments are structured such that teams play multiple matches in pool play, and based upon pool play results teams are seeded so that some or all may play-off to determine finishes. Results from prior tournaments determine initial seeding for any given tournament during the season. Tournament locations vary and may be as close as here in Alameda at the Bladium or may be in the south bay or in the Sacramento area. Tournament locations are usually announced a couple of weeks prior to the tournament. The tournament schedule is set and is as follows:

September 15, 2012 - Non-League Tournament
September 22-23, 2012 - League Qualifier (used for initial seeding)
October 7, 2012 - League Tournament #1
October 21, 2012 - League Tournament #2
November 17, 2012 - League Tournament #3
December 2, 2012 - League Tournament #4
December 15-16, 2012 - Northern California Regional Championships

January 5-6, 2013 - Far Western Championships (optional - TBD by team)

June 28 - July 5 (4 days per age group) - Boys Junior National Championships (the cost for this tournament is not included in the season fees. If the team decides to participate, there will be an additional cost for those who play).

Volleyball is a team sport, and everyone who makes a team will be expected to participate in all tournaments. However, we know there may be a good reason for having to miss a tournament. Please let us know during try outs if you know of any conflicts with this tournament schedule.

Notification

Club volleyball is competitive, typically more competitive than high school league play. We will do our best to include as many players as possible. However, team dynamics and practical limitations may compel the club to accept a maximum number of players per team. We hope to be able to expand our program in the future to be able to accommodate more players on more teams. For any players who try out and do not make a team, please check this web site regularly as the club will be putting on inexpensive clinics and camps during the year.

NCVA rules state that clubs cannot officially accept players on teams until 48 hours following their tryout for the team. Thus Island Volleyball Club will begin notifying players who make the team(s) after 8:00 p.m. on Friday, August 24. For those who make the team, there is a mandatory parent meeting following the team formation.
